Peggy Haymes Counseling
nothing is the same..
Changes brought by the Corona virus have turned our lives upside down.
Here are some resources for finding your way.
While we may be physically isolating, we all need some help in navigating these days. You'll find some of that help here, whether a video to watch on your own, resources offered by others or ways that we can work together.
"As people become more anxious as they self-quarantine at home, Winston recommends mindfulness meditation, a practice that has been proven to alleviate stress, depression and insomnia, as a way to cope."
The above its from this article from the LA Times about benefits of meditation and mindfulness, simple guides for getting started and links to resources. Some of these resources, like the Headspace App, are offering their services for free during this pandemic.
Guided imagery is a kind of meditation in which we enlist the power of our imaginations. It's been shown to be effective in dealing with (among other things) stress, pain, improving surgical experience, and reducing anxiety. You can see some of the research here.
.A variety of imageries are available through Belleruth Naperstek's Healing Journeys site. She has a combination of free downloads and downloads variable for purchase. You can also access them through her Healing Journeys app, which includes both free downloads and those available with a subscription.
You may be bored out of your skull right now, and any suggestion is a good one.
Or you may be working harder than you've ever worked in your job.
Or you may be juggling suddenly working at home with providing schooling for kids.
Whatever your situation, these tools aren't meant to be one more thing for another chaotic to do list. For many of these tools you only need a few minutes. Some of them even work while you're asleep. (Some of them can help you GET to sleep.)
Lowering our stress levels helps our immune systems function better. And it certainly helps us get along better with the people with whom we may be sheltering in place!
Mostly, we have to take care of ourselves before we can be present for any other person or job in our lives.
“Some days, doing “the best we can” may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn’t perfect on any front - and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else.”
If you've been a client of mine, you've probably heard me refer to Andrew Johnson's hypnosis apps. I've found them to be terrifically effective for most people dealing with stress, problems sleeping, and anxiety. He has some free apps and some for purchase.I myself have downloaded the Relax+ app which allows me to listen to up to three different hypnosis topics on a loop as I sleep.
You can also follow him on Facebook, where he is offering free meditations.
